Shown here is a structure of the rat mitochondrial F1 (catalytic)
ATP synthase complex
(1MAB, Bianchet et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 95:11065-11070 '98).
The alpha subunit (chain B, colored in magenta and yellow by structure) is homologous to
yeast vacuolar ATPases and archaeal H+-transporting ATP synthase
proteins. These proteins have inteins in the yeasts S.cerevisiae and
Candida tropicalis (integration point VATA-a) and the archaeons
Pyrococcus horikoshii OT3 and Pyrococcus furiosus (VATA-b).
The positions corresponding to these two points are shown in this structure
as cyan spheres, located amino terminal
to the integration sites - residues 162 and 185.
