Shown here is a structure of the rat mitochondrial F1 (catalytic) ATP synthase complex (1MAB, Bianchet et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 95:11065-11070 '98). The alpha subunit (chain B, colored in magenta and yellow by structure) is homologous to yeast vacuolar ATPases and archaeal H+-transporting ATP synthase proteins. These proteins have inteins in the yeasts S.cerevisiae and Candida tropicalis (integration point VATA-a) and the archaeons Pyrococcus horikoshii OT3 and Pyrococcus furiosus (VATA-b). The positions corresponding to these two points are shown in this structure as cyan spheres, located amino terminal to the integration sites - residues 162 and 185.
